Dairy Factory De Bommelerwaard

Dairy Factory De Bommelerwaard

The former Dairy Factory "De Bommelerwaard" in Ammerzoden is a building rich in history. Built in 1917 as a steam-powered dairy factory, it later became known locally as the "Seed Potato Storage Facility." After its closure, the building served various purposes until it was purchased by a cooperative growers’ association for seed potato storage. This renovation erased part of its history—or did it?

The building, while not listed as a monument, is a key part of the local heritage. Transforming and repurposing significant historical structures is a pressing topic in modern architecture. Rather than demolition, this project focuses on uncovering history and designing a new use that harmonizes with the existing structure.

Much is known about dairy factories in general, but the story of "De Bommelerwaard" remains unresolved. The first step of this project involves historical research to uncover the original state of the factory. What dairy products were made there, and how were the spaces used? Why does the building have multiple sections, and what did the facades originally look like? A 1920 interview describing a factory tour offers a glimpse into daily dairy production and serves as the starting point for this research.

Once the historical context is mapped out, attention turns to the building’s future. This involves exploring how it could take on a new (public) function that gives back to its community. After defining a Program of Requirements, a design will be developed to adapt or transform the factory. Will your design make a clear distinction between old and new, or build on the existing structure? In this project, your design choices are more important than the final outcome.

Through this assignment, you will gain experience in historical research on heritage sites and learn to address one of architecture’s greatest challenges today: the adaptive reuse and transformation of prominent historical buildings. If you are eager to learn more, sign up now!
