Guided by Water and Soil: Eindhoven’s Future
Within the municipality of Eindhoven, there are several stream valleys of existing and filled-in streams. These result in low-lying areas in the landscape and high groundwater levels. Additionally, Eindhoven’s soil consists of sandy loam, which is poorly permeable to water. In the coming years, the municipality plans to undertake significant construction projects (housing, office buildings, and infrastructure), such as Knoop XL. The national government, the province of North Brabant, the Dommel Water Board, and the municipality of Eindhoven emphasize the importance of the "water and soil as guiding principles" approach in spatial development.
The challenge now lies in simultaneously implementing the "water and soil as guiding principles" approach while carrying out large-scale construction projects. We take this idea further: If the principle of "water and soil as guiding principles" were to lead all new construction developments, what would the city look like?
And what opportunities would this create for, for example, urban greening and a healthy living environment? How would it contribute to the experience and narrative of Brainport?
