Old milk factory
Would you like to contribute ideas on the reuse of buildings of historical importance?
The assignment is to investigate the reuse of the grain silo and milk factory in Ambt-Delden. The current owner is looking for a creative transition of this building, the building is part of a larger plan to use the former factory site for housing. It is a pre-war building. The city architect would prefer that it retain an industrial appearance. The building is historically important and image-defining for its surroundings but not monumental or protected.
The question is how to build flexibility into the design so that future residents can influence their housing design. The target group are local "starters" seeking low-cost housing. Growing youth cannot find housing in the villages because only more expensive segment is being built, causing the youth to move away. This has a negative impact on the area, facilities disappear and the region ages.
Additional issues such as sustainability and energy play a role in the assignment. As a designer, do you think you can create an "out of the box" design with respect for the existing? The final plans will be exhibited in the milk factory for inspiration for the municipality and local people.
