The former dairy factory “De Bommelerwaard” in Ammerzoden is a building rich in history. Built in 1917 as a steam dairy factory, it is better known locally as the “Poterbewaarplaats” (potato storage). After the steam dairy factory closed, the building served various purposes before being purchased by the cooperative growers' association for seed potato storage. This new owner renovated the building, seemingly erasing part of its history—or perhaps not entirely?
The building is a defining feature of the village and significant to the local history, though it is not a listed monument. The transformation and repurposing of important historical buildings is a current topic in contemporary architecture. Rather than demolishing structures, their history is researched, and new designs are created in analogy with the existing architecture. This assignment consists of two parts: a historical study and a design project.
In this project, you will explore historical research on existing heritage and tackle one of the greatest challenges architects face today: repurposing and/or transforming iconic buildings. Interested in learning more about this? Sign up now!
